Ruby Bhatia and Ajit Dutta’s simple wedding ceremony in Mumbai

From Punjabi girl to Bengali wife!
By Marcellus Baptista

A Punjabi girl has now become a Bengali wife. Bubbly and chirpy
television personality Ruby Bhatia tied the knot with dance instructor and choreographer Ajit S Dutta in a simple ceremony in Mumbai on December 2.

It was an early morning tale of traditional Vedic rites with the
couple solemnizing their love for each other as fragrant flower
necklaces were exchanged. Both Ajit and Ruby are initiated disciples of Sri Sri Paramahansa Yogananda and other faithful disciples showered rose petals on them and chanted hymns.

The bride looked beautiful in a gorgeous red net sari with gold work and a flowing red chunni, complete with maang tikka, bridal bindis, Punjabi chuda and traditional bridal jewellery. The groom looked handsome in a rich maroon embroidered sherwani, coupled with a long silken stole, pearl-ornamented pagdi and artistic mojris. The outfits were gifted to the bride and groom by the families.

The wedding was attended by close friends and family and was held at a pious religious centre in Andheri (West), Mumbai. The barat arrived at 10 a.m. A warm and loving milni ceremony was performed, followed by a bountiful breakfast. The bride arrived, garlands were exchanged and then the sacred feras began at around 11 a.m. The bidai was at 12 noon, after which all guests joined the newlywed couple for a lavish lunch at a fine dining suburban restaurant.

After a fun cake-cutting ceremony, the couple was seen off to their mini-honeymoon at Mumbai's own hill-station, an oasis within the city, the Royal Palms in Goregaon's pristine Aarey Colony. And there was a touch of humour when Ajit’s shoes were stolen by Ruby’s sisters and he was asked to pay up ‘in kind’ – he promptly broke into what he does best, dance, by twirling his bride around as she sung a Radha-Krishna chant. Ruby was gushing about settling down with a wonderful, kindred soul, while Ajit was holding forth on marriage, saying that marriages are made in heaven but celebrated here on earth and he vowed to celebrate every moment, every day of their life.

The couple were engaged on April 27, on the auspicious day of Akshaya
Tritiya at ISKCON Temple.
